Warning Protect Yourself Against Fraud

Criminals/hackers are known to target the email accounts of REALTORS®, title companies, and lenders as well as the other parties involved in real estate transactions. They have been known to intercept emails about transactions in process which contain information such as: phone numbers, social security numbers, closing dates, down payment amounts, etc. The criminals have then used this information to contact buyers or sellers posing as employees of an entity involved in the real estate transaction in an attempt to have funds transferred to them fraudulently by deception. These criminals are convincing and appear legitimate when they call or email, they are very believable because they have all the correct information and their emails appear to have the proper email signatures.

In every real estate transaction, buyers and sellers are advised to:

  1. Never wire funds. Most real estate transactions do not require the buyer or the seller to wire funds;
  2. Never send personal information such as social security numbers, bank account numbers, and credit card numbers;
  3. Call any party who legitimately needs personal information from you directly at a number that you know is correct, don't respond to calls from people that you are not certain that you recognize who ask for this kind of information.
